The summer season is when North Dakota truly comes to life, and you can really feel that here in Devil's Lake! While our winters are sadly long and cold, our summers are incredibly beautiful, so tourists and locals alike want to get out on the lake and into nature. Here are our recommendations for summer activities you must try this year in Devil's Lake, ND. 1. Go Swimming at Black Tiger Bay Devil's Lake is famous for its lake,of course, so no summer here would be complete without a dip in the most famous lake of the Badlands! And there's no better place to do it than this little swimming hole at 3820 83rd Avenue, with a pristine sandy beach tucked under a canopy of trees. Summers get hot here in North Dakota, so jump in the lake to cool off, then run back to the beach to tan under the summer sun. And if you get too hot again, you can either jump back in or head for the shade in the forest. If you want to spend the evening (and the next morning) here, there are almost 100 camping lots available within a quick walk of the beach. 2. See an Outdoor Play at Fort Totten Little Theatre Devil's Lake's own community theater comes alive each July, where you can catch the professional cast performing a famous Broadway act 3-4 nights a week. But this isn't your typical town theater: the plays are performed with the most scenic backdrop imaginable on the shores of Roosevelt Park in Devil's Lake and under the star-filled Dakotan sky. The performance will surely wow you, and your family if you come here, and tickets are only around $15. Bring a picnic and make it a family outing! 3. Take a Boat Out on the Lake Boating is what most tourists come to Devil's Lake to do, and it's certainly a popular summer activity for locals as well. If you're into fishing, Devil's Lake offers some of the best catches in the Dakotas, with summer being the peak season to catch walleye, northern pike, bass, and perch. Or if you're into watersports, hook up a tube to your boat or slap on some water skis and turn the magnificent lake into your summer playground! They also host lots of events and activities throughout the year, including a haunted hayride, so be sure to check their calendar before you go. White Horse Hill National Game Preserve White Horse Hill National Game Preserve is a great place to go if you want to see some wildlife. Located just over an hour from Devil's Lake at 2107 Park Dr, this game preserve is home to bison, elk, deer, pronghorn, and prairie chickens, to name a few. White Horse Hill also boasts an expansive trail system, nearly 50 miles of it, and is open from April 1st through October 31st, weather permitting. This would be a great place to go for a day trip if you're interested in seeing some wildlife as well as taking in some great scenery. Icelandic State Park Icelandic State Park is a great place to go if you're interested in seeing a little bit of history. Located roughly two hours from Devil's Lake at 13571 ND-5, Cavalier, Icelandic State Park is home to one of the largest concentrations of Icelandic architecture outside of Iceland. There are 19 remaining buildings at this park, including churches, barns, and a schoolhouse, replete with artifacts from the area's Icelandic settlers, as well as a museum. This would be a great place to go if you're interested in architecture or history or even just want a relaxing day trip. Providing habitat to white-tailed deer, American bison, and several bird species, this place encompasses an area of nearly 1,700 acres and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Established in 1904 as Sully Hills Park, this place boasts a mixture of wooded hills, wetlands, and mixed grass prairies, allowing visitors to discover the diversity of the area's environment. This park also offers public workshops, guided nature hikes, and conservation programs for young visitors. Furthermore, fishing and selective hunting are permitted in certain areas of the park. 3. Ruger Park A beautiful green area featuring a fishing pond, picnic spots, and open fields, Ruger Park is a place where you can enjoy a sunny day without driving too far from the city.
