Tucked away from the bustle of the country’s big urban areas, the city of Devil’s Lake, ND is surrounded by beautiful lakes and plenty of nature reserves where you can reconnect with nature and have a picnic with your family on a sunny day. If you are looking for the best parks to discover while you explore North Dakota in your new 2023 Ford Escape, here are three spots you should check out.

1. Grahams Island State Park

Originally part of a complex of three nature reserves that have been gradually closed due to rising lake waters, Grahams Island State Park is one of the best-known destinations for a weekend escape in the region. Established in the 1980s, this green area encompasses a territory of nearly 1,000 acres and can be reached in a little over 15 minutes by car via routes ND-19 and 72nd Avenue.

Although Grahams Island State Park is a fantastic place to simply spend a day away from the city, breathe some fresh air, and have some snacks with your family, it is also a popular spot for a variety of sports and outdoor activities. Some of the amenities visitors can find in this public recreation area include fishing piers, public boat launching ramps, cabins, and a large campground.

2. White Horse Hill National Game Preserve

As one of the largest nature reserves in the area, White Horse Hill National Game Preserve is not only a fantastic park to discover but also a haven for wildlife watchers, birders, and anyone interested in outdoor events and activities. Providing habitat to white-tailed deer, American bison, and several bird species, this place encompasses an area of nearly 1,700 acres and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Established in 1904 as Sully Hills Park, this place boasts a mixture of wooded hills, wetlands, and mixed grass prairies, allowing visitors to discover the diversity of the area’s environment. This park also offers public workshops, guided nature hikes, and conservation programs for young visitors. Furthermore, fishing and selective hunting are permitted in certain areas of the park.

3. Ruger Park

A beautiful green area featuring a fishing pond, picnic spots, and open fields, Ruger Park is a place where you can enjoy a sunny day without driving too far from the city. This public recreation area is located just a couple of miles northeast of downtown Devil’s Lake and can be reached in less than 10 minutes by car. Open Thursday through Tuesday between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm, this park can be visited free of charge.
